How often should you deep clean your home?

How often should you deep clean your home?

Most people call us about a deep clean after they have already noticed something. Grout in the hall bathroom has gone a shade darker than it used to be. There is a film on the kitchen cabinet doors that a wipe cloth slides right over. Baseboards look a little furry when the afternoon sun comes across them.

Here is the short answer: twice a year keeps most homes in good shape. That is the baseline, and plenty of houses in Omaha need it more often than that.

What a deep clean actually covers

A regular clean handles the surfaces you touch and see every day. Counters, floors, sinks, toilets, the visible dust.

A deep clean goes after everything the weekly pass skips. Inside and on top of the fridge. Behind the toilet and along the base of it. Cabinet fronts and the greasy strip above the stove. Window sills, door frames, light switches, vents, and the baseboards in every room instead of the two you can reach without moving furniture. Grout gets scrubbed rather than mopped over. It is slower work because it is done by hand in places a mop never reaches.

How Omaha weather changes the schedule

Our seasons do real damage to a house. Winter means the windows stay shut for months while the furnace pushes dust through every room, so by February the air has been recirculating the same particles since November. Spring pollen coats sills and screens. Summer humidity feeds mildew in bathrooms that do not vent well. Then fall brings the whole cycle back around with leaves and grit tracked in from the yard.

That is why late winter and early fall tend to be the natural booking windows. You are cleaning up after the season that just ended and giving the next one a clean start.

When to move the date up

Some houses need a deep clean every three or four months instead. Yours is probably one of them if any of this sounds familiar:

  • You have pets. Hair works into carpet backing and upholstery seams, and dander settles on every horizontal surface.
  • Small kids live there. Sticky handprints on walls and door frames, crumbs under furniture, and a lot more floor contact.
  • Someone has allergies or asthma. Dust and dander buildup is the trigger, and hand cleaning removes far more of it than vacuuming alone.
  • You cook most nights. Grease travels. It lands on cabinet doors, the range hood, and the wall behind the stove whether or not you see it.
  • You are hosting. Holidays and family visits are reason enough.

A schedule you can actually keep

Pick two months and put them on the calendar, for example March and September. Book the deep clean for those, keep up your regular routine in between, and the house never gets far enough behind to feel overwhelming.

If it has been longer than a year, that first appointment will take more time than the ones after it. That is normal. Once a house has been reset, maintaining it is much easier work.

Common questions

How often should a family home be deep cleaned?

Twice a year works for most households. Homes with pets, small kids, or allergy sufferers usually do better every three to four months.

Is a deep clean the same as a spring clean?

It is the same work. Spring is simply the most popular time to book it, which is why the phrase stuck.

How long does a deep clean take?

A typical Omaha three bedroom house takes most of a day. The exact time depends on square footage and how long it has been since the last one.
